Sailboat Bay Newsletter - August 2020

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Welcome to the brand new, updated Sailboat Bay Newsletter! This newsletter will be updated monthly although it may not come out on the same day each month. Since George Nahas is busy with his extended board duties, four-year resident Michelle Segrest has agreed to lend us her 30 years of marketing and journalism experience to build an updated, interactive newsletter for the community.

Building from the popular “Dolphins” newsletter created by George, this updated version will look and feel a little different but will have a lot of the same information you have been receiving, along with a few extras. We will continue to provide you with HOA social and activity news that is important for you to know, maintenance updates, events, and announcements. We will feature the best photos, videos, and stories from our community, so please send your favorites to michelle@navigatecontent.com. We will provide a link each month on our Facebook Group page, on the SBB website, and through our email system. All you have to do is CLICK!

Michelle and the board have gotten together to brainstorm tons of ideas to inform the community and also to help us get to know each other better. If you have ideas and photos you want to share, just pop her a quick email at michelle@navigatecontent.com. If you have complaints, or HOA questions or comments, DO NOT leave them here. This is a happy place and there is no room here for complaints, negativity, or politics. Send questions, complaints, and concerns to your board at sbbboard@sailboatbay.net.

Debbie & Jerry Browning

Unit 601

Debbie and Jerry Browning recently moved in to unit 601 and plan to be here part time—in the winter and during some weeks in the summer. Debbie and Jerry are from Memphis, Tennessee, where Debbie lived all her life. Jerry was a Navy brat and has lived all over the place—from Hawaii to Alaska—and then ended up in Memphis where he met Debbie 44 years ago. The Brownings have one son, Jesse (37), who is a detective with the Memphis police department, and his better half, Crystal. They will be around Sailboat Bay from time to time.

The Brownings have a miniature schnauzer dog named Captain Pip (Pip for short). Jerry is a retired school teacher and was a small business owner in the collision repair industry. Debbie is a retired X-Ray and Ultrasound technologist. They are both eager to learn and enjoy the boat and fishing opportunities in the area. They enjoyed boating on the Tennessee River for 20 years. “We have met some wonderful people already and are looking forward to meeting more!” Debbie said.

CONVERSATION STARTER—Ask Debbie and Jerry about their love for music and photography! Jerry is a musician and hopes to find small venues to play locally. Debbie is a photographer and is hoping to find some wonderful wildlife and scenery to add to her collection. She is also a struggling violinist!

Ellen & Randy Schmitt

Randy and Ellen Schmitt live full-time in Clinton, Iowa and recently purchased a unit here at Sailboat Bay. They will be here part-time as “snowbirds.” Randy is a retired dentist and pharmacist and enjoys golf, biking, duck hunting, and especially pickle ball. Ellen likes to walk, read, and spend time with her grandchildren. Randy and Ellen have two children. Philip is a dentist and his wife, Stephanie, is a teacher. They have two children—Will (6) and Lucy (3). Joe is a PhD in Astrophysics from Yale and works at the Pentagon. Randy is looking for a small cuddy cabin boat for fishing and camping out and is interested in learning how to fish.

CONVERSATION STARTER—Ask Randy about playing pickle ball! He would love to see the tennis courts improved and would be interested in starting a weekly pickle ball program for the community and would be happy to teach beginners how to play.

FISHING REPORT

By Captain Chris Hinton

September is here, and the Redfish are biting!

The reefs have produced some nice bull reds the last several weeks, and I have had reports of some 25-inch and bigger redfish caught in the ICW between SBB and the Wharf. We have had some reports of the speckled trout bite moving inward at night around the dock lights. Please feel free to email me your fishing reports and any photos you may have at Chrishinton74@gmail.com.

On a personal note, this week I buried my pops at 84 years old. Fishing was more than a hobby for him—he had a passion for it. How many of you remember fishing with your dad, father-in-law or grandad? It’s more than the fish you catch or the big one that got away—it’s the laughs and the memories you share during all those years you have together! Take time to spend with the ones you love! They are not promised tomorrow.

Get out that reel and start fishing! Remember the best time to go fishing is any time you can!

BOOK CLUB

Who wants to join our ZOOM book club? We will read one book a month and have a Zoom meeting to discuss. If interested, please email michelle@navigatecontent.com

This month’s book club choice:

“What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism” by Dan Rather

At a moment of crisis over our national identity, venerated journalist Dan Rather has emerged as a voice of reason and integrity, reflecting on—and writing passionately about—what it means to be an American. Now, with this collection of original essays, he reminds us of the principles upon which the United States was founded. Looking at the freedoms that define us, from the vote to the press; the values that have transformed us, from empathy to inclusion to service; the institutions that sustain us, such as public education; and the traits that helped form our young country, such as the audacity to take on daunting challenges in science and medicine, Rather brings to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world’s biggest stories.

As a living witness to historical change, he offers up an intimate view of history, tracing where we have been in order to help us chart a way forward and heal our bitter divisions. With a fundamental sense of hope, What Unites Us is the book to inspire conversation and listening, and to remind us all how we are, finally, one.

Do you know any plumbers, contractors, pest control, handy men, painters, AC Repair, cleaning services, deck builders, etc. that you can recommend to your neighbors? If so, please send their names, phone numbers, and emails to michelle@navigatecontent.com.

MAKING OUR COMMUNITY BEAUTIFUL

By Catherine Naman — Landscape Committee

Thanks to so many of our great neighbors for coming out to help at each request. You are dynamite! And thanks to all our "cheerleaders" that comment favorably while passing by. We love all the encouragement. We worked the front entrance beds in several phases during the summer weeks.

The bad storm we had in late May/early June that caused flooding on the road killed the existing lantana and the running petunias that were planted. After a few weeks we realized the plants were not coming back, so we took that opportunity to totally re-work both beds. We removed the dead plants, turned the old soil, added new soil and new edging. We then planted 218 new plants (Lorapethlum, Zinnia, Vinca, and Joseph Coat) in those two beds along with monkey grass to help hold the soil in place and then topped it off with new pine straw.

We've had many favorable comments about the two big red bolders moved from the boatyard to each bed. And the next time you enter the clubhouse, hopefully you will notice the "spruced-up" planters on the front and back decks. There are so many neighbors to thank for all this hard work. Whether it was with an actual shovel in hand or simply a conversation sharing an idea for the great curb appeal or both, you are ALL greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Jenny Canterbury and Nancy Schrader who manually water the hibiscus every day! Thank you to you ALL for making our slice of paradise so beautiful. Volunteers will be hearing from the committee soon regarding several early fall projects planned. Just waiting for the days to cool down a bit.

Catherine Naman works hard with community volunteers to keep the grounds of Sailboat Bay beautiful! If you are aware of any landscaping needs, or if you would like to volunteer to HELP with the landscape committee, please call or text Catherine at 251-510-9750.
